Downy Blows

Arriving lately on Ellie’s desk

Evangelists and gentle ladies of London’s upper crust staged a loud and emphatic protest against a travelling circus performing at Astley’s Amphitheatre this week. Piggott Brothers Carnivale of Mysterie boasts an impressive collection of exotic animals, acrobats, mentalists, mediums and other stage performers, as well as the famed House of Freakes and Oddities. When reached for comment, a spokeswoman for the protestors, who wished to remain nameless, stated, “These carnies are nothing but a lot of toolers and cheats offering cheap thrills and penny gaffs to swindle the good people of this city out of their hard-earned pocket money. Their name sounds French. If that ain’t enough to tell you they’re a load of highwaymen and beggars, I don’t know what is. They should be barred from the city and the lot of them hanged as thieves.” As to whether the spokeswoman had seen the Piggott Brothers’ show, she responded, “I don’t have to visit the Chapel to know it’s full of lurkers and dollymops, do I?” A representative for Piggott Brothers stated, “[Piggot Brothers] seeks only to amuse and entertain. We have no intention of injuring or robbing the good people of London Town in any way. Our show is a spectacle of exotic wonders and marvels. You can see us at half four and half seven all week at Astley’s Amphitheatre. And we aren’t French. We’re from Kent.”
